Several weeks ago I had applied for a position and I recently had emailed to follow up. Today, they told me I am not the candidate for the job. That alone was frustrating, but shetook it a step further and explained that due to my lack of undergrad education I am not “qualified” or “fit” to fill this position. I quickly emailed the HR representative back and triple checked the resume I submitted. To my surprise, she replied.
“Dana College does not exist. Therefore, your education does not exist. We at minimum require a bachelor’s degree for this position and you do not hold one.”
To say I was furious was the understatement of the century. Knowing this was a battle I wasn’t going to win I took a deep breath. I kindly reminded her that I hold a masters degree in the same field and thanked her for her time. After the insult I didn’t want to work for her anyway.
Dana College may not exist now, but it’s memory lives on. Just because my college closed does not mean I received a less than adequate education. My professors were extremely knowledgeable in their fields and worked extremely hard so students would not only do well in the classrooms but excel and pass tests in life. Their biggest joy was to see us succeed.
I chose to go to Dana because I felt at home there almost instantly. It was a small campus with small classes and the soccer team welcomed me with open arms. The whole campus was like a giant extended family, and no I’m not exaggerating. I vividly remember looking over during a soccer game and seeing my German professor, members of the cross country team, a golfer, and members of the basketball team, who had all walked down the hill to come see us play. Little things like that is what made Dana special.
I know this ignorant HR lady did not really mean to offend me or anyone for that matter. However, I would just like to make one thing clear. My education means something. I’m proud to be a Dana Viking. I will always bleed Dana Red. Nothing and no one no one can take that away.
It’s a great day to be a viking.
